Utilizing Drone and Satellite Technologies to Support Military Organizational Mobility: A Case Study of the Indonesia–Papua New Guinea Border Patrol Task Force

Background. Remote border regions face major operational challenges from harsh terrain, poor infrastructure, and limited spatial data. Drone and satellite tools enhance situational awareness and mobility without replacing existing personnel.
Purpose. This study examines how drones and satellites improve mobility and identifies the organizational factors driving their effective use in Indonesia–Papua New Guinea border patrols.
Method. Using a qualitative case study design, researchers interviewed 30 selected participants, reviewed institutional documents, and conducted structured observations. Data were analyzed using thematic, descriptive, and inferential methods.
Results. Satellites provided broad spatial coverage, while drones offered detailed local observations. Organizational readiness (r = 0.71, p < 0.001) and personnel competence (beta = 0.34, p = 0.006) strongly predicted mobility effectiveness.
Conclusion. Tech adoption requires more than just hardware; training, infrastructure, data governance, and clear protocols are vital. A sociotechnical strategy ensures sustainable mobility and informed border operations.
